Riverside Green South Bank
Brisbane’s Riverside Retreat
Set within South Bank Parklands, Riverside Green is a thoughtfully designed oasis in the heart of Brisbane. Beyond green space, it’s a model for public places that serve people, community, and climate while embracing the city’s riverside character.
At its centre is the River Lawn, a generous space for picnics, informal games, and quiet riverside views. This lawn connects to a raised rainforest deck and pavilion, built with timber and copper to suit Brisbane’s subtropical climate. Six built-in communal barbecues, shaded seating, and movable furniture make it ideal for family gatherings and casual weekend cook-ups.
The Grotto, a sunken garden under a vine-covered pergola, offers a cool, green escape. The rainforest has been extended by 600 m², with over 50 trees planted and watered through a sustainable, non-potable irrigation system. These natural features add shade and biodiversity.
Public art adds meaning to the space. Water is Life, a sculptural water channel by Ngugi artist Elisa Jane Carmichael, honours the site’s natural history and celebrates First Nations’ deep connection to water and Country. Families are well catered for, with a nearby playground featuring slides, swings, and climbing structures for all ages.
After sunset, colourful LED lighting adds a gentle glow to paths, trees, and gathering areas, keeping the space safe and inviting into the evening.
