Sydney Park
Rolling hills, wetlands, and iconic brickworks chimneys
Sydney Park in St. Peters is a 40-hectare, award-winning regional park in inner-city Sydney known for its rolling hills, wetlands, and iconic brickworks chimneys. Once an industrial site and landfill, it has been turned into a lively community with recreation space.
The City of Sydney manages the park, combining landscape architecture, environmental restoration, recreation, and public facilities to create a space where people want to gather, spend time, and enjoy their environment.
Several stakeholders and consultants worked with the City of Sydney to deliver their vision, including JMD Design, Turf Design Studio, and TRACT. These teams designed playgrounds, wetlands, paths, picnic spots, kiosks, sports areas, amenities buildings, and gathering spaces that serve both daily visitors and large community events.
A key part of Sydney Park’s success is the considered placement of public barbecues, shelters, seating, paths, lighting, and other features throughout the park. Instead of being separate pieces of infrastructure, the combination of shaded picnic zones, bike paths, playgrounds, wetlands, and communal cooking facilities reflects a broader shift in public space design toward inclusivity, wellbeing, and community connection.
The project demonstrates how carefully designed public infrastructure and amenities can activate open spaces and strengthen the role parks play in everyday community life.
