Arkadia Apartments
A Benchmark in Sustainable Building Design
Arkadia Apartments in Sydney is an exemplary model for urban living, focusing on community, sustainability, and design. Completed in 2019, the six-storey development is a benchmark for connected, liveable apartment living in Australia.
Each floor is arranged into clusters of seven or eight apartments with its own lift, encouraging neighbourly interaction. At ground level, a brick arch framed in spotted gum creates a welcoming entry and links directly to Huntley Green, a landscaped pocket park.
The building’s form and use of more than 480,000 recycled bricks pay tribute to the site’s brickworks history while achieving strong sustainability outcomes. Arkadia operates entirely on carbon-free energy, serving as a leading example of low-emission housing. Bicycle parking, car share, and proximity to two train stations further support its focus on sustainability.
Social connection is another central focus. Communal terraces include productive gardens, while the rooftop offers barbecues, shaded seating, vegetable beds, and even a chicken coop! These spaces encourage daily encounters, friendships, and a shared commitment to environmental care.
The project won numerous awards, including an AILA Award of Excellence for Gardens, a City of Sydney Design Excellence Award, and the Australian Good Design Award for sustainability and precinct design.
Five years on, Arkadia has matured into a much-loved home where residents enjoy the vibrancy of inner-city living and the warmth of a connected community.
