Moort-ak Waadiny / Wellington Square
Tradition Meets Tomorrow at Moort-ak Waadiny / Wellington Square
The revitalised Moort-ak Waadiny / Wellington Square in East Perth is a vision of inclusion, cultural respect, and community connection. After a major redevelopment led by the City of Perth, the park offers something for all ages and interests.
The redesign honours the land’s cultural significance to the Whadjuk Nyoongar people. The park’s name, “a place of family,” reflects its role as a traditional gathering space. This heritage is woven into the park’s layout, with Aboriginal themes and Western Australian landforms integrated into its design.
At the centre is Koolangka Koolangka Waabiny, a massive 3,000-square-metre intergenerational playground. One of the largest in Greater Perth, it features nature play, a skate park, parkour areas, slides, water play, and climbing towers. The park also includes basketball courts, an off-leash dog area, and flexible sports fields. Around 350 trees were planted to boost biodiversity and provide shade, achieving a 60% canopy cover.
Community-friendly amenities are a key focus. Shaded picnic zones and free barbecue areas are scattered throughout, creating perfect spots for social gatherings. Accessible paths, water fountains, and public toilets make the park a pleasant and enjoyable experience.
In the north-west corner is a space of reflection dedicated to the Stolen Generations. This quiet area invites contemplation and acknowledges the historical trauma Aboriginal communities face, reinforcing the park’s deeper purpose as a place of healing and learning.
Moort-ak Waadiny / Wellington Square is a standout example of an inclusive, future-focused public space, blending cultural recognition with practical design to encourage connection, play, and community pride.
